With New York Fashion Week fading away in the rear view mirror, the new fall must-haves are sure to spice things up this season. From sequin tops to fur skirts, this fall is certain to be a great one – at least in the fashion world! Designers like Burberry Prorsum, Michael Kors, and Marc Jacobs showed the fall’s new trends in a chic, integrated way. Marc Jacobs created his own version of the classic schoolgirl with a black sequin cardigan, a long gray skirt, and tall gray socks – all hit items for the fall! (Image above)
Another new trend, gray! Lots and lots of gray pieces layered with black and khaki.
The mixture of different neutrals gives it a new twist – like a camel blouse with grey slacks. Also, accents like fur, velvet, sheer layers, cut out pieces, leather leggings, and sequin tops liven up these basics for a more contemporary look. Keep your eye out for designs inspired from the fifties, urban country, clean chic, and menswear, which are going to be popular this fall as well. By bringing back the classics and revamping them with modern touches like a velvet blazer, the fall has a whole new look with items you already own!
So how can we translate these new trends into our everyday-wear? For those of us who live in the South or
Southwest and temperatures hardly get below freezing, some of these essentials like fur are hard to wear. Being from Texas, I’ve learned how to adapt the trends to fit the weather. I will definitely be buying a sequin
cardigan – it can go with anything and is one of this season’s best staples! For the fur trend, I’ll be looking for a fur messenger bag or vest; yes, vests are still in for the fall! A fur vest is a great fix because it isn’t too
warm, but still has the luxurious feel of a trip to Aspen.
Also, for a touch of velvet, a velvet skirt with a sheer or cut-out shirt is a good choice. This way you are mixing heaver and lighter fabrics as well as different textures, which is what this fall is all about! Sweater dresses have become a staple in my closet and work great in Texas weather. To keep the sweater dress from being too heavy, don’t add more layers like fur boots or scarves and stick to the lighter accessories like
booties or a fifties inspired belt.
The best part about these new trends is they can be mixed and matched to make several outfits! For this upcoming season, try to get out of your comfort zone and try new a combination of different textures. Between leather, sequins, velvet, sheer fabrics, and fur, great things are sure to come! Also, search through your closet for old pieces from a few years ago, or a few decades ago; vintage pieces always make a great
statement!
